Here’s a little recap of news on Halloween, though now we’re looking forward to November sweeps to see what fun WLOSers will come up with. Can’t wait!
First lady visits
First Lady Laura Bush stopped in at the WNC Agricultural Center Tuesday morning in an attempt to boost flagging Republicans, in particular U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor, who’s in the fight of his life for his House seat.
Pat Simon told us that Republicans had to have an invite to get in, but Simon never told us how many people showed up. The crowd looked a little sparse. Bush hit on immigration, jobs and the war in Iraq and said some nice things about Taylor, according to Simon. Then he gave us some history about first lady visits to WNC in the past. O, and WLOSers talked to a protester with Veterans for Peace.
WLOSers backed that up with a 30-second hit on Taylor’s challenger, Heath Shuler, in a posed shot standing over a campaign worker making phone calls. WLOSers said Shuler’s campaign is calling unaffiliated voters to try and get them to vote for Shuler. Shuler said his volunteers have been “tremendous.”
Bus rider pistol-whipped
Holly Headache told us that a teen on an Ashvegas city bus was pistol-whipped Monday night and beaten up in an apparent robbery attempt.
It happened on Deaverview Road, route 41. The victim told police somebody pointed a gun at him and asked him what was in his pockets. A fight broke out. The victim was beaten up. The bus driver pulled into a brightly lit area and called for help. Police are looking for suspects. Holly said there were security cameras on the bus, but they didn’t work.
The local newspaper reported that five or six gunshots were fired during the melee. Holly didn’t have that major detail.
In other news…
A bunch of political signs were removed in Brevard. City officials said its against the law to have signs in public rights of way and on public property…. There’s a new development plan for the Brookwood golf course. The developer had planned 160 or so home sites, and he’s dropped that to about 130. Neighbors are angry… A Macon County couple – mom and boyfriend – have been charged with child abuse after their 8-year-old daughter appeared to be bruised and showed up at school with a “reverse mohawk” given to her as punishment for something. The couple is out on bond, and the child has been removed from the home… John Le went to Brevard to look at a guy’s awesome Halloween decoration – it was a tall War of the Worlds tripod erected over his house. Awesome!… And Larry “Smoka” Blunt stuffed his piehole with a bunch of pumpkin pie at an event in Hooterville.

Not like WLOS, which quotes "many people" all the time (what people?) and has interviews with people with NO IDs at the bottom of the screen. Get off your low horse, Steve. The newspaper, while flawed, is a helluva a better local news source than the crap that passes as reporting on TV.
Could it be that she didn’t have the gun shots because APD never said there were gunshots. UNCONFIRMED reports of gunshots. Go figure the paper would run unconfirmed info
