The weekend news re-run

As they always do, WLOSers ran Saturday night’s news first thing Sunday. So here you go:

Special K on skis
Kassandra “Special K” Pride went out to the Catalooche Ski resort on Saturday to watch people ski and snowboard. The resort claims its the first on the East Coast to open for skiing. There’s one run open.

Special K said something weird – she said that Catalooche was able to open “thanks to one of the coolest Novembers on record.” Well hell, it was only Nov. 4. What the hell?

Record-breaking cold
Early Saturday, the Ashvegas airport recorded a new record low of 21. The old record low was 22 degrees, set in 1966, a “long-standing” record, according to Julie Blunder.

People are still sick in Yancey County
Russ told us that people are still sick in Yancey County, where the first flu cases of the season in North Carolina have been recorded. Schools will remain shut until at least Wednesday, and health officials want people to avoid big crowds. Are there any big crowds in Yancey County? Maybe at the Waffle House…

Rental car office up in flames
The Budget Rental Car office on Swannanoa River Road went up in flames Saturday about 11, Russ said. The office, in a little trailer, went up in flames shortly after the dude in the office left for a bit. Nobody was injured, but the worker dude said all the paperwork is lost. A heating device may have started the blaze, Russ said firefighters said.

Still yapping about the debate that didn’t happen
Russ said U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor and challenger Heath Shuler were still yapping about the debate on Friday that didn’t happen.

Taylor went door-to-door in Henderson County to ask people to vote for him. He said he was within the rules and it’s too bad the debate didn’t happen. He also said it’s too bad it didn’t happen earlier because 60,000 people have already voted, according to Russ.

Out in Madison County, Shuler held his last big campaign event. Shuler said he felt he did the right thing in walking out of the debate, saying that “the most important thing is to follow the rules” and Taylor didn’t do that. Shuler leads Taylor by five points in the latest poll, Russ said. Russ also said the Taylor-Shuler race is the most expensive congressional race in North Carolina.

Speaking of early voting…
It ended Saturday, with more than 28,000 people in Buncombe having cast their ballots.

In other news…
There was a benefit art auction at the Grove Park Inn for the WNC Aids Project.

Ah, Lil Smokeys — the perfect place to sit back, eat a greasy burger, and watch all the young uns make the u-turn in the radio station/USDA parking lot to cruise back down to the car wash at the other end of town. Or has Burnsville cracked down on cruising by now?
