The first 10 p.m. newscast on WYMA/40: a review

Share

WLOSers Holly Headrick and Frank Fraboni kicked off the first-ever 10 p.m. newscast for sister station WMYA/40 (channel 9 on local Charter cable) and offered up standard fare. The top stories were pretty bland – identity theft is bad; there’s a dangerous road in these here mountains; and there’s been another toy recall.

Holly and Frank tried to set themselves apart by standing up through the first few minutes of the newscast. Edgy.

Here’s what they had:

Identity theft is a problem
Frank did the story about a Henderson County who, while applying for a job at Park Ridge Hospital, found out that there were three warrants out for her. Well, not really her. Turns out her wallet had been stolen in 2002, but she never reported it. She’s been trying to clear her name ever since.

Frank told us the same thing everyone has told us for years when it comes to protecting yourself from identity theft: beware of telephone solicitors; don’t use your mailbox – drop your mail off at the post office; and shred any documents that have account numbers and SSN numbers. Yawn.

Frightening robbery
WLOSers had good in-store robbery video of some guys sticking up a convenience store on Hwy. 25/70 in Madison County, so they did a story. The robbers stole thousands of dollars, but a passerby got the tag number off their car and the four dudes were arrested over in Tennessee.

Woman dies in wreck
A woman died after her car left Cullowhee Road in Jackson County and ended up in the Tuckaseegee River. There have been lots of accidents on that road, and Russ Bowen said he’ll have more about it at 11.

In other news…
Frank and Holly had something about some wells in Sylva contaminated with gas and benzene and the town of Sylva working on extending a water line to help out… The state doesn’t have enough dam inspectors and the TV news folks were taking credit for bringing this problem to light… State inspectors are out at the WNC Ag Center checking out the rides for the upcoming Mountain State Fair, which opens Friday… And finally, there are plans to memorialize former Roberson High School student and football player Cameron Underwood before the team’s football game on Friday night.
