CHOWCHOW 2021

Originally posted to Stu Helm: Food Fan Facebook page on 9/28/2021

On Sunday I was fortunate enough to attend the very last ChowChow event! It was a “story-teller” dinner, where each course was preceded by a story. I wish I had been able to attend more ChowChow events this year, but I’m very grateful that I was able to attend this one! I have included pictures of the menu & program so you can see who was involved and what-all we ate. Thanks to all the producers, staff, volunteers, chefs and story tellers for making this happen! ❤️❤️❤️

VIDL POP-UP AT CULTURA

Originally posted to Stu Helm: Food Fan Facebook page on 9/26/2021

Daaaaang, Y’all! I got invited to a super fancy 5 course meal called Oaxacalifornia by Chef Luis Martinez last week. It was a Vidl pop-up at Cultura and it. Was. Awesome! The highlights for me were the ceviche and the puerco, which were both just fantastic! I included a picture of the menu, so you can get the full description, plus flyers for Vecinos, an org that provides free bilingual primary and mental healthcare to uninsured farm workers. It was a fundraiser.

There were also a ton of awesome n/a cocktails for me, that I posted pictures of three days ago.

O. M. G. Y’all. My friend Micah and I went to Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse for lunch today, and boy howdy! That’s some dang good grub! We started with the superstar mushroom dish, and then shared the rock shrimp, bokchoy, and three skewers. Delicious, exciting, and fun! I’m an instant fan of this new restaurant! ???

WAKUWAKU EATERY

Originally posted to Stu Helm: Food Fan Facebook page on  9/23/2021

This food from Chef Naomi Mikami of Wakuwaku Eatery was SOOOO delicious! The ham katzu is exactly what is looks like: deep fried ham ‘n’ cheese. I could literally eat these every day at any time of day. Super duper yumtastic. Five stars. The other dish, isobe age, is a kind of fish cake sprinkled with nori and served with a veggie side, and it was equally yum! There are also some traditional Japanese ohagi mochi balls, that Chef made specifically for the Fall equinox! AND while she was at my house, Chef set up and played a song on her beautiful musical instrument, called a koto, that she brought to Asheville all the way from Japan!

From the chef: “The menu was
Ham Katsu (plain and with cheese)
Isobe Age (Chikuwa fish cake, Aonori seaweed flavor)
Konnyaku noodle salad
Ohagi (anko and soy bean flour)
Here is the link of music that I recorded for our concert in Japan. You can see Anya in there as well.
