Ashvegas Hot Sheet: StorageMax coming to Riverside Drive in Asheville

-The new City Centre office and hotel development at the corner of College and Charlotte streets celebrated its official grand opening yesterday, reports the Asheville Citizen-Times. Asheville developers Rusty Pulliam and John Spake partnered on the project, buying the property for $4.2 million and erecting the office building, a $24 million structure that is now about 90 percent occupied and home to several offices, including BB&T bank and Roberts & Stevens law firm, reported John Boyle writes. Winston-Salem-based Quality Oil Inc. owns the adjacent property where the 140-room Hilton Garden Inn opened. The entire project has a value of $65 million, Spake told the newspaper.

NPR yesterday aired a feature about Wayne Henderson, a renowned luthier in southwestern Virginia, and his daughter, Jane Henderson, who lives in Asheville but travels to her father’s shop to continue to learn how to make awesome guitars. Renovation work is slated to pick up on the former Hannah Flannagan’s location on Biltmore Avenue. A new restaurant (a pizza joint) is planned for street level, but I don’t have details yet.

StorageMax is coming to Riverside Drive near the intersection with Broadway. The location (adjacent to Grainger) was once the planned site for a condo project that never got off the ground.

Publix is scheduled to open in Weaverville in about three months.

The old Fiddlin Pig restaurant on Tunnel Road was demolished recently. No word on what’s planned for that site.

Buncombe County Schools will begin construction in the next few weeks on North Buncombe Middle School according to construction bid site. There will be about three phases of work done to lessen headaches at the school. The first phase will reconfigure the child pick-up/drop-off to the front of the school with a new access road about 300-500 feet north on North Buncombe School Road from the current road that is currently being used by Optix Eye Care and just south of the tennis courts. Work will also move the bus lot to the back end of the school with entry for kids using the bus in that hallway between the auditorium and the classrooms. Once the new access road is being used, the hope is there will be no more gridlock on Dula Springs Road or to those houses leading down to the middle school. Once that phase is complete, crews will begin building onto the school. That work includes upgrading the locker rooms in the gym to ADA compliancy, adding 5,600 square feet to the gym between the current gym building to the main school where that paved lot is, and adding onto the cafeteria. They will also add new classrooms where those trailers are located between the brick and mortar wings of the school just north of the band room near the auditorium. They will also be work to renovate the library. Once that’s done, the plan is to remove the trailers where the bus parking will be located at the rear of the school.

A team of visual artists, producers, and performers are collaborating on an event called Tranceformation. The event, put on by red.tree Inc. in partnership w/ Pro B-Tech Global DJ & Artist Managment, is set for Oct. 14 at Highland Brewing. The event is packed with music, art, dance, food and drink.

It’s about time something went into that Hannah Flannagan’s. They must’ve been asking a fortune for rent for that place to be vacant for so long.
