Man arrested
The man who allegedly tried to rape a woman at Northview at Biltmore Lake apartments has been arrested, WLOSers told us. The case has gotten a lot of attention because the Buncombe County Sheriff’s deputy who first investigated the report last week was fired by Sheriff Bobby Medford.

Man not arrested
Meantime, police are still looking for the suspect wanted for shooting a woman at Pisgah View Apartments. The woman was shot four times in the neck, but was treated and released from the hopsital because her injuries weren’t life threatening. No detail from WLOSers on a motive for the shooting.

Naval reserve center shuttered
The venerable old Naval Reserve Center off Merrimon Avenue was officially closed during a ceremony yesterday. The center, which opened in 1948, fell victim to federal budget cuts in a Pentagon base realignment plan announced last year.

The center’s commander told WLOSers that the ceremony focused on the Navy personnel who have served their country. WLOSers didn’t mention this, but the center was the home to a Navy Seabee unit – basically a construction unit – that served in the first Gulf War and had several soldiers develop the mysterious “Gulf War Syndrome” illness.

Shindig
Susan Mundy, who was holding down anchor duties Saturday, said that “the summer’s first Shindig on the Green” was held Saturday. Wrong-o MaryLu. Shindig kicked off last weekend, hun.
