Social Distortion brought their high-octane sonic assault to The Orange Peel Monday night and the tattooed masses were ready for the battle to begin.

After solid sets by opening acts Frank Turner and Lucero (see concert preview from Friday’s take 5) , front man Mike Ness and the boys took the stage for a solid hour-long set that included perennial favorites Sick Boy, Mommy’s Litter Monster, Ball and Chain, I Was Wrong and the crowd-pleasing Prison Bound.

The slick-backed and dapperly-dressed Ness had fun with the crowd saying “Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think we’ve played Asheville before,” and commented on his new chilly fall climate, “It’s mountain cold up here.”

While a few knuckleheads did take the rowdy fun a little too far, krewe members at The Orange Peel effectively isolated the troublemakers to keep them from ruining the fun for everyone.

Many people in the crowd (present company included) wore leather jackets that were starting to show their age, but Social Distortion’s show reminded me that regardless of what is printed on my driver’s license I are never too old to enjoy a punk rockin’ good time.

Jonathan Rich is a freelance writer who is taller than Mike Ness, but is still pretty sure the lead singer of Social Distortion could still kick his ass.
