This photo shows a rather relevant portion of the old Interstate Motel sign that used to stand along Hiwassee Street in Ashvegas. The property owner, Tony Cecil, had the sign taken down despite efforts to find a way to save the sign. Cecil saved the lettering from the sign and said he’ll see if he can find somebody who can still make some pop art from it.

The sign went up 44 years ago over the Interstate Motel, a place that became notorious as a “no-tell motel” where hookers would meet their johns and service them. The building was gutted a few years back and transformed into condos. The property owner said he’s going to build a second building on the site with small condos and little parking, with the idea being that there will be one or two cars that owners can sign up to use when they’re in town. The new building will probably have 60 or so condo units in it, he said.
