Shake-up on Asheville’s movie theater scene: Cinebarre dropping first-run movies

Share

From the Asheville Citizen-Times:

Asheville’s Cinebarre movie theater will make a major format switch next month, discontinuing new first-run films for a second-run discount shows.

The theater, located at Biltmore Square Mall, will be heavy on second-run art house type features, plus some major features as well. The change happens Oct. 1.

Cinebarre will become only the second local theater to screen discount movies, following Asheville Pizza and Brewing. Movies at Cinebarre will cost $3, same as the films at Asheville Pizza and Brewing.

Cinebarre made a big splash when it opened here about three years ago in the Biltmore Square Mall. People loved the idea of being able to sit down in a movie theater, catch a hot new movie, and be served a meal – with beer! But since then, the economy has taken a dump and flashy new theaters – the Biltmore Grand 15 out in Biltmore Park and the Carolina Cinemas down on Hendersonville Road – have opened up. We’ll watch and see what happens next.

I'll bet Cinebarre will not be in business in Asheville this time next year.

i went to cinnebar once and could not believe they charged $2 a soda and did not offer free refills. so being there with my kid and each of us having one refill cost us $16 on just soda! we never went back. waaaaaay to snooty. nice to see that a tanking economy forced them to come back to reality.

and we usually get some good food and chill and talk when we we go to APB, and don't mind the wait at all. the people that work there are awesome and so down to earth. that is our favorite place for an affordable night out.

That sounds awesome! I hate that you have to show up extra early and wait in line to go to a show at the brew & view, even on a week night.
