Note here from loyal reader Tonya. The event is on Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Valley Springs Middle School:
This is a large scale safety event that a local girl scout started and in turn it’s lead to a community wide attendance offered event. It covers everything from Police Vehicles on site, Fire Trucks, Smoke House, Police Motorcycle, Car Seat Checks, Bicycle Safety info, to drugs/alcohol; distracted driving (speeding, under the influence of drugs/alcohol, texting, cell phones, radio/mp3/ipod distractions too).
We’ve got guest speakers coming, including Mr Amos Johnson, father of Ashley Johnson who died last year attempting to retrieve a text. We have a law groups sponsor who will be speaking about the legalities of distracted driving related accidents. We have a Street Survival School Rep there to talk with the parents/community about what they have to offer in defensive driving/teen awareness.
The Highway Patrol and Henderson County SO will be doing driving demos for the older kids w/text and drinking distractions. Buncombe County SO is covering cyber bullying, bullying and Drug/Alcohol Presentations as well. We have a long list of agencies joining us as well. We will have food on site for sale as well. It is a free event, aimed solely at community awareness/prevention. We want to reach out to as many families as we can in an effort to stop some of the losses that our community has experienced in the last couple of years.
