Rumor control: MAHEC affiliation with midwives is changing

Share

Note here from a loyal Ashvegas reader:

Here’s the situation. The MAHEC midwives have been affiliated with the MAHEC OBs for years, but if a woman only wants to see the midwives for a non-complicated birth you can do that. Many women, especially in Asheville, appreciate the midwifery model of care.

Rumors are swirling that MAHEC is losing money on the midwives and starting Jan 1 you can only see them for prenatal visits, not births. Is that true? If so, is that the reason? Many women will be impacted if this is true and I think it is of interest to Ashevillians. Please look into this if you can.

MAHEC has posted on its website about the "new midwife model of care." Yes, this means they will not attend births, except if they are at the hospital between 9-5 Mon-Friday. I'd imagine most people want to go to the same practitioners for prenatal visits and the birth event, so its hard to see how this will work. I can't help but think its dismissive of the importance of midwifery care.

Please please please look into this. Make more people aware! The MAHEC Midwives were #1 in the country for VBAC (Vaginal Birth after C-Section) for their size of practice. Women are less likely to have a c-section or use pain medication with midwives and have shorter hospital stays. All these factors add up to less $$$$$$ for insurance agencies!
