Rockslide

Here’s a great photo from loyal reader Jody, who has some nice insights into the rockslide (see her comment here). This is really going to make life interesting for travelers in Western North Carolina for the next few months. I can already tell that traffic across the Smoky Park Bridge in Asheville is thicker with people taking the Interstate 26 – Hwy 25/70 route around this mess.

Will somebody PLEASE THINK OF THE GOATS?!?

Interesting thing: I have personally seen goats in that very location on three occasions. They were very healthy and robust. I saw one running very very fast in the grass behind that fence. Another one was climbing up that very cliff just as easily as you or I would cross the street. They seem attracted to the lush grass growing between the shoulder and the steep rock face.

I had heard of the goats before seeing them and had said "Yeah. Right." But they really are there. A theory I heard has it that goats escaped from settlers or drovers back in the day and the population is now thriving in the wild.

Hopefully there’s not pressed lamb under that rubble.

The general DOT water cooler chat agreed this morning that the fence was probably inadequate…

I REALLY like how the fence held everything back!

Don’t forget, the ’97 slide was cleaned up in the summer. Freezing temps will complicate this clean up.
