PHOTOS Hyatt Place hotel construction on Haywood Street in Asheville

Here’s a look at the construction of the new Hyatt Place hotel on Haywood Street in downtown Asheville. There’s a wave of new hotel construction planned in downtown Asheville. The Hyatt, as you can see, is well underway.

Meantime, site preparation work is going at the corner of Charlotte and College streets, a site known as 311 College that will include a Hilton Garden hotel and office buildings.

The rest of the hotels are in the proposal or drawing stage, as far as I can tell. Here’s my running list of new hotels proposed for Asheville.

Hey, So how much do they have to pay to shut down a public street for so long? Or is it a free service for major corporations that want a piece of “local” downtown?

the road is likely to remain shut down until around Christmas. This has nothing to do with an agreement with the hotel. The contractor ordered it to be shut down due to construction vehicles entering the work zone, delivering materials and exiting the construction zone.

Making a distinction between “the hotel” and “the contractor building the hotel” is just semantics, though … the real question is why a frequently-traveled section of road can just be closed off for three or four months while a private project is underway. Does anyone remember if construction of the Indigo closed things off in the other direction for anywhere near as long?
