Pastor on Koran sign: I apologize

The Rutherford County pastor who claimed he stomped on the Koran and posted a sign outside his Forest City church proclaiming “The Koran needs to be flushed!” has now apologized.

The report, first reported in the local newspaper, garnered national attention. No Rev. Creighton Lovelace has apologized. Here’s the latest story.

Here’s part of the report:

On Tuesday, the Rev. Creighton Lovelace, pastor of the church, declined to apologize for the display despite the outcry of protest.

On Wednesday, when contacted by a broadcast news reporter with The Associated Press, Lovelace backed down from that stand.

Lovelace said that in posting the sign he meant to affirm and exalt the Bible, not insult Muslims.

“When I posted the sign in front of the church, it was my intent only to affirm and exalt the Bible and its teaching. It was certainly not my intent to insult any people of faith, but
instead to remind the people in this community of the preeminence of God’s word,” Lovelace
said, according to a copy of an AP transcription of the pastor’s statement.

“Now I realize how offensive this is to them, and after praying about it I have chosen to remove the sign early, and I apologize and deeply regret that it offended so many in the Muslim community,” the statement continued.

Lovelace said the church sign’s message has been replaced with a new one that reads: “Jesus said, ‘I am the way.”

Muslim, Christian, Martian or Hippie, there’s only one rule to live by:

Don’t Be A Dick.

But don’t worry, pastor. God forgives you. That’s why she’s god.

In news another statement intended to “affirm and exalt the Bible and its teaching”:

“We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit … We want to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theater, and in the press – in short, we want to burn out the poison of immorality which has entered into our whole life and culture as a result of liberal excess during the past few years.”

“Christianity could not content itself with building up its own altar; it was absolutely forced to undertake the destruction of the heathen altars”

Both quotes are from Adolf Hitler.

And, lastly, from America’s most caustic atheist, “I want you to know, when it comes to believing in god- I really tried. I really really tried. I tried to believe that there is a god who created each one of us in his own image and likeness, loves us very much and keeps a close eye on things. I really tried to believe that, but I gotta tell you, the longer you live, the more you look around, the more you realize…something is FUCKED-UP. Something is WRONG here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is NOT good work. If this is the best god can do, I am NOT impressed. Results like these do not belong on the resume of a supreme being. This is the kind of shit you’d expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently run universe, this guy would have been out on his all-powerful-ass a long time ago.” – George Carlin

Too bad he apologized, what he said is what a lot of people think about the “religion of peace”; but then again the apology may have saved his life.
