Mom charged
WLOSers said 40-something mom Selene Thoms was charged with serving alcohol to under-age drinkers during a party at her big house one Elk Mountain Scenic Highway. The party was Friday, but this was the lead story on Tuesday at 6.
Cherub Charu brought us the story and showed us a mug shot of Thoms looking pretty awful. There were 150 to 200 young people at the party, according to the police. The cops showed when somebody complained about noise from the party. Charu talked to a mother of a girl who was apparently a friend of Thoms. This mom said Selene knew how to party.
Shooting follow
WLOSers Holly Headache talked to the widow of Lacy Pickens on Tuesday. Police shot and killed Pickens in the parking lot of an Ashvegas Cracker Barrell last summer, and an SBI investigation cleared Ashvegas police in the shooting. The officer who hit Pickens with four shots was justified in feeling like his, and his partner’s, lives were in danger, the SBI and the local district attorney said.
The widow said she’ll pursue legal action against the cops because she thinks police over-stepped their bounds.
Holly tossed in a bunch of other facts that made Pickens out to be a pretty hard-core criminal, noting that Pickens was part of a federal investigation where he may have been dealing cocaine. Holly didn’t offer a source on that tidbit.
Doctors file lawsuit
The eight emergency room doctors at Haywood Regional Medical Center who were fired last year have filed a lawsuit saying the hospital improperly ended their contract.
Billboard protest
Diva Darcel said protesters “hijacked a billboard” for a “sky-high” protest on Tuesday. The two protesters, with a group called Rising Tide, climbed a billboad on Riverside Drive to hang their own sign protesting Progress Energy’s planned power plant for Woodfin. The utility wants to build the power plant to help meet demand at peak times.
Pat “Simple” Simon said the protest was a “sign of the times,” especially in light of reports last week that scientists agree that global warming is a man-made problem. Simple Simon went out and talked to people on the street about whether or not we should start doing something to stop the death of our planet. Most said yes, but one guy said hey, he still needs to drive to get around. Simon also talked to Ulla Reeves, some enviro, who said we need energy solutions.
Simon also talked to a Progress Energy dude, who said solar and wind power options aren’t reliable enough. Coincidently, Progress Energy reported that the utility hit a new all-time high for electricity demand on Tuesday morning.
Cute dogs adopted
Thirty of 34 dogs seized from a home recently were adopted out on Tuesday. WLOS pet reporter Julie Blunder said the Australian terriers found happy homes after about 100 people lined up to try to adopt. The dogs were seized after police said they weren’t being cared for properly.
Blunder said Hugh Cole, one of the two original owners of the dogs, showed up to try to adopt two dogs that he said were working dogs. Police escorted him off the animal shelter premises.
A flood of water line breaks
WLOSer Susan Mundy was up early Tuesday to tell us that there were five water main breaks, including one on Hendersonville Road that spilled water that turned to ice, causing a chain-reaction wreck. There were four wrecks involving eight cars, Mundy said, on Hendersonville Road near the Sagebrush.
A water department official said the recent cold snap is causing old cast iron pipes to burst. The city won’t be paying for any damage because they tried to fix the broken pipes as soon as possible.
Insulin injections suck
That was the gist of Jay Seltzerwater’s health report Tuesday.
Diploma debate
Terry Foster offered a report that said the N.C. Board of Education wants to toughen diploma requirements for graduating public school seniors. The new requirements under consideration include having four math credits instead of three and two foreign language credits. There will be a March 22 public hearing coming up. The new rules would apply to 9th-graders in fall 2008.
Foster talked to several people who said the new requirements would encourage more drop-outs. These people made the proposal out to be so onerous that nobody could possibly graduate. We really doubt that.
In other news…
Asheville Middle School Principal Pam Cocke was named WNC’s Wachovia principal of the year for our region. She’ll go on to compete at the state level… And Sheraldo says there’s a new prescription drug card being offered in Henderson County to help people pay for their prescriptions.

Yeah, WLOS fired Jon Greiner because they said he wasn’t "glitzy" enough. He was a pretty good anchor. WLOS news is a joke.
I don’t know about mid market. I, occasionally, watch tv news from bigger markets and its the same crap.
Ash, I hope you saw Russ Bowen’s story on Skyland FD tonight (2/7). Solid work there!
By the way, i found this guy. If it’s the same Jon Greiner, he used to be anchor along side Darcel in the 80’s. I don’t recall much about him except for the eyebrows, which seem to match. (I was in my early teens.) http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/wtaenewsteam/302175/detail.html#
What?? What’s the cops’ side.. there was a member of command staff in that story! If you’re going to slam someone get YOUR facts right!
Well, I am sick of this particular argument: i.e. we’re a middle market so we don’t have to be good. That is bullshit.
How does that statement make any sense Ron?
Our friends and relatives would lose their jobs becuase your blood pressure is rising from news 13?
Or, our friends and relatives at news 13 will lose their jobs due to an annoynmous ashevegas blogger’s scathing criticism?
If Its the first one…well, lets hope its not becuase thats just insane.
If its the second one…LOL. Yeah Ron, your real big over at WLOS. Your annoynmous criticism has the whole station trembling in fear.
Get over yourself. No one cares.
This is a mid market. WYFF does the same crap, and Fox Carolina is litterally full of insane people, so maybe you should just move.
Or be greatful that a city the size of asheville has an actual station dedicated to it and the surrounding area, which is almost unheard of.
One or the other.
Ahh, it’s my fault. I have a thing for *local* news, which is why it’s on in the house. I’m a bad wife.
I think there may be some confusion over whose daughter was what age at the time of the bash/bust.
Thoms daughter is under age, but Ron was referring to the complainant Mom’s daughter, who he said was 24. I don’t know either Mom or either daughter, but I think Ron and Ash could both be correct here.
What’s the matter, afraid that some of your imcompetent friends and/or relatives might lose their jobs?
Ron, we don’t want you to have a stroke there, big boy!
I’m with Cecil. Just don’t watch. We don’t have cable, and we survive (in fact, I just left the doctor’s office and my bp was 92/64. Hell, yeah! I’m gonna go drink some beer!).
Yeah, well, Jody, if being arrested while drunk and disheveled and tossing beers to minors is edgy, I don’t wanna be it!
Don’t mean to take off your polish Edgy, but Selene has been a seriously edgy mama for a long time now.
RON WROTE: "What both Mom and the Cherub glossed over was that the daughter was 24 and therefore perfectly able to choose to be corrcupted if she wishes."
NOT THAT I AM ONE TO DEFEND CHARU KUMARHIA, BUT LOOK AT THE ARREST REPORT, IT STATES, THE DAUGHTER WAS UNDER THE AGE OF 21 AT THE TIME OF CONSUMPTION! Come on guys, shame on you Ash for praising Ron for an inaccurant statment. We are all Journalist here, lets start acting like it!
Cecil, that’s right! Thanks for the new tagline.
"Ashvegas: we watch WLOSers so you don’t have to"
ron from hendersonville, you really need to move on and just not watch.no one’s forcing you. hate for you to have a heart attack, but, you’d really think you are an expert on everything that exists. the annoying person at a party who won’t shut the f*** up. WLOS is a mid level market so don’t expect top twenty reporting. And remember the reporters, photogs, producers are all paid next to nothing. yes, some just suck but that’s management’s hiring as well. So you get what you pay for. Of course some of the anchors are the exception, there you’re getting less than you pay for.
Ron,
Turn off your TV and slowly back away. Just because Sinclair re-upped with your cable carrier doesn’t mean you HAVE TO watch it.
Remind me why you subscribe to cable in the first place. Maybe that’s the real problem here. Ash watches WLOS so no one else has to.
Ron, you rock.
Characteristically, WLOS apparently missed the point of the story and approached it in a truly convoluted way. The Citizen-Times apparently got it right; the cops answered a noise complaint at the Thoms residence and quickly discovered well over a hundred partiers. They noted underaged drinkers and arrested Ms. Thoms; allegedly she reisted and the cops cuffed her on the ground. Our loony friends at WLOS chose to focus mostly on the mother of one of the part guests. Mom, who looked as if she has seen a few too many parties hereself, accused Ms.Thoms of corrupting her daughter with a wild and glamorous lifestyle full of booze and wild parties. What both Mom and the Cherub glossed over was that the daughter was 24 and therefore perfectly able to choose to be corrcupted if she wishes. Charu barely mentioned the police officers’ side of story, leaving out other information available in the ACT story. Why bother to report a story if you can’t get the basic events correct?
Holly’s account of the Pickens shooting failed to mention that he was carrying significant weight of blow in the car, which may have given him the incentive to use the vehicle as a weapon. And the ssympathy shots of the grieving wife and children should have been balanced against the fact that Pickens was a truly hard case who did nothing to make the world a better place for non-relatives.
BTW, my blood pressure is up 20 or 30 points since WLOS and its crack news team returned to my televsion. I had almost forgotten how incompetent they are. What a disgrace. And what an embarassment for Asheville
