Ciarra Newman of Hendersonville was recently named North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen. That’s basically a fancy title for a beauty pageant. They had a party for her last weekend in Henderson County.
Her cause – raising money to fight multiple sclerosis. She goes on to the next level of competition Aug. 15 in Orlando.
Here’s a recent news story about her:
HENDERSONVILLE — Ciara Newman, a rising senior at North Henderson High School, was crowned North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen last week in Raleigh.
Newman, 17, represented Hendersonville in the state competition. She will go on to compete in the national finals Aug. 16 through Aug. 19 in Orlando, Fla.
The Miss America’s Outstanding Teen competition is part of the Miss America Organization, the largest scholarship provider for women in the world.
“I knew I had done everything I possibly could to prepare, and I had hoped all week that I would win, but it was still a great surprise,” Newman said after the
competition.
Newman is the first winner from Hendersonville to compete in the state teen pageant, which was started last year. She is the daughter of Gary and Paula Newman, and she attends Ebenezer Baptist Church.
During the competition, Newman was a preliminary winner in the physical fitness competition.
“Her sincerity, her excellent conversation skills and her outgoing personality made her an obvious choice for North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen,” said Tiffany Ervin, executive director of the local pageant in Hendersonville. “The judges got an opportunity to get to know her during her private interview competition, and I’m certain they fell in love with her just like everyone else has who has had the opportunity to meet her these past few months.”
In addition to a $3,000 savings bond, Newman also won a prize package that includes free hair care products and services. Gregory Ellenburg of Gregory Ellenburg Pageant and Special Occasion in Greenville, S.C., has agreed to donate a custom-designed evening gown for Newman to wear at the national pageant.
