Ashvegas Hot Sheet: NPR features West Asheville bakery and ‘election cakes’

Here’s some of what’s going around, including election cakes, calendars and much more:

NPR over the weekend featured OWL Bakery in West Asheville and its push to make election cakes this month. Bakers/proprietors Susannah Gebhart and Maia Surdam posted the slogan “Making America Cake Again” (a play on the Donald Trump slogan) along with free recipes to help teach a little culinary history.

The Asheville Fermentation Association will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Burial Beer.

-Local digital marketing agency Persona Creative is kicking off 2017 with a new workshop called Weekend Website. It’s focused on helping entrepreneurs and small business owners establish themselves online, according to a press release. Here’s a little more:

Attendees will receive detailed instruction, course materials, headshot photos from a professional photographer, and the tools they need to finalize and launch their website. Websites will be built on the powerful and popular Squarespace platform, giving attendees access to professional website tools that allow them to create an online store and blog. The January session of Weekend Website is scheduled for Jan. 21 and is hosted by Asheville Folk – a local creative coworking space – with guest instructors Christina Forêt and Rob Decker. The Asheville Downtown Association is promoting a mixed-use development for the downtown “pit of despair” property on Haywood Street.

Asheville Unreported says to vote “No” on the Asheville bond referendum questions.

Asheville Outlets on Brevard Road will offer trick-or-treating from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 31, with music, games and crafts going until 9 p.m.

A new limited-edition calendar by Mark File, owner of RomanticAsheville.com, features seasonal pictures of 12 of Western North Carolina’s exquisite waterfalls. Here’s more from a press release:
