News for a Tuesday that feels like a Monday

Holiday traffic
WLOSers told us last night at 11 that they usually stand beside the highway on a holiday weekend and tell us how bad the traffic was. But Monday night, Carolyn “Little Red” Ryan said this Labor Day weekend was different – the news was that there actually wasn’t any news on the highways.

Traffic’s fine. Gas prices are down. People told Carolyn they were fine on the roadways. All that seemed to sort of stun Carolyn, who told guest weekend anchor Terrie Foster, hey, everything’s fine.

Canton parade accident
Terrie told us in a weakly reported story that a boy fell off the Cub Scout float during the Canton Labor Day Parade and got run over by the float. There was “a bit of panic,” Terrie said, but emergency workers said later that the boy “seemed” stable. Who knows? A scary accident, nonetheless.

Telethon
Did everybody see WLOSers dressed in their finery for the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon? Larry “Smoka” Blunt’s ill-fitting tux aside, Diva Darcel looked wonderful. Julie Blunders blue ball gown was horrible. Why do they dress like that anyway? All they’re doing is standing in the food court at the Ashvegas mall. C’mon. You’re in the food court, begging for money. You gotta dress up for that?

Hendersonville storm
There was a nasty thunderstorm in downtown Hooterville Sunday night that force N.C. Apple Festival organizers to move a few things around. There were some trees down and stuff, but nothing major.

In other news…
The news that everybody was talking about yesterday was the shocking death of Steve Irwin, the crocodile hunter. The kids loved the croc hunter. Everybody loved the guy’s zest for life and love of animals. The guy was swimming in a barrier reef when a sting ray stabbed him in the heart with it’s tail barb. Irwin was only 44 and left behind a wife and children. He’ll be missed… The embattled Duke lacrosse team hit the fields for another year. Not sure why this was news, but it was… And Tiger Woods won his fifth PGA tournament in a row Monday. He’s a living legend, folks.

re: telethon

My guess is the Jerry Lewis/MDA folks require them to dress like that. I’m sure they’d just as soon not be in evening wear in the middle of the mall.

Speaking of the telethon, did you catch any of the bits with the kid from the Upstate who’s the national spokesman or whatever — man, what an articulate and well adjusted kid, considering his age and all the crap the disease has put him through.
