New group art show at Asheville’s Carolina Cinemas features work by artists who started in graffiti art

Gus Cutty and Carolina Cinemas present “Reckless Abandon”

A group art show featuring works by Trek 6, Ishmael, Ted Harper, Topr, Melt FTK, Big Bertha, and Gus Cutty.

Opening Reception: Friday June 27, 7 – 9 pm at Carolina Cinemas, 1640 Hendersonville Road

The show will be running through the month of July.

Curated by local Asheville muralist and aerosol artist Gus Cutty, “Reckless Abandon” features work by artists who began their careers in the largely misunderstood culture of graffiti art. In this extremely sensitive period of Asheville’s growth from obscure mountain town to premier tourist destination, the argument of graffiti versus art is one that has continued to raise emotions throughout the community and to which this show hopes to address in a constructive manner.

All of these artists began their artistic development in very different locations from Miami to Boston and San Francisco practicing the art of graffiti lettering and the craft of aerosol manipulation. This show is a testament to the power of a youth culture that has saved so many from darker paths and even led some to very successful careers in fine art and graphic design. From the portrait work of Gus Cutty and Trek 6, one of Miami’s best known street artists, to the traditional lettering of Topr and the psychedelic constructions of Asheville local Ted Harper, the works in this show illustrate the many aspects of aerosol art and the various ways that the artists have used their backgrounds to uplift their means of expression.

The hope is that this is not the end of the graffiti argument but the beginning of a conversation on the positive aspects of an original American culture that shows no sign of slowing down.

@Eric, I’d agree with that, but I still don’t think “I’m not going to do any social media because it’s a fad” is going to be viable for most businesses. Even if it’s just listening (and I think that’s a perfectly legit way to go). So Twitter may well be a
