More of what’s going around, including a proposal for a group of new townhouses and apartments in East/West Asheville:

-Here’s a quick look at development proposals that were on Monday’s agenda of the Asheville Technical Review Committee. The group is usually the first stop for new projects:

Beacham’s Curve: Five land parcels located about the northwest quadrant of the road intersection of Haywood Road, Beverly Road and Ridgelawn Road in west Asheville, commonly known as Beacham’s Curve, are proposed for residential and commercial redevelopment in two phases. Phase 1 will consist of one residential and commercial mixed-use building (denoted Phase 1A) and a block of five townhomes (denoted Phase 1B), each fronting on Haywood Road along either side of Beecham’s Curve. Phase 2 will consist of two small apartment buildings within the interior of the project site. The project contact is Matthew Sprouse.

 Commonwealth Court: A request for review of a four-lot major subdivision on 0.72 acres known as 57 Booker Street. The property is owned by LB Hudson Construction, LLC and the project contact is Melanie Brethauer.

UNCA New Student Housing: Five new student housing buildings with 67 units for University of North Carolina at Asheville. Project is on Founders Drive. Owner is University North Carolina Asheville. The project contact is Dave Toms.

Jumbo Storage II: A request for the review of a level II site plan to allow the construction of a self-storage facility consisting of two buildings with a total gross floor area of 37,930 square feet on 2.31 acres known as 165 Glenn Bridge Road. The owner of the property is M Realty, LLC and the project contact is Clay Mooney.

Elff Auto Center: Revision; Conditional zoning request from RS8 to HB to provide landscaping buffer to 1093 Tunnel Road.

-The Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity recently dedicated six new Habitat homes in the Shiloh neighborhood. Here are the groups that helped build the houses: Christmas Jam; Legacy Builder’s Society; Land of Sky Association of Realtors/Rusty Pulliam Foundation; Eaton #9/Alice D. Hamling Foundation/Asheville Duathlon/Anonymous; and Publix Super Market Charities.

-New Belgium Brewery has a new CEO, and he comes from the liquor industry. (Forbes)

-Food Connection, the Asheville nonprofit that collects leftover restaurant food and gets it to people in need, is considering expanding to other cities, according to the Mountain Xpress. It’s also looking at buying a food truck to better deliver food to neighborhoods in need.

-Holler AVL, an arts collective, has published its first online edition.

-Some Black Mountain residents are gearing up to fight a proposed three-story development in the heart of their town, according to the Black Mountain News.
