The 2,000-square-foot Iron Palm Bouldering gym will have 16-foot-high ceilings to accommodate 14-foot-high climbing walls. (The actual climbing area is close to 3,000 square feet, Martines tells me.) There will be 6-inch-thick mats that climbers can drag around to cushion any falls. There will also be 10-inch-thick mats for those daring free climbers who might want extra protection.
Iron Palm should be open by mid October, Holoschak says. There will be day passes available, punch cards for discounts and quarterly memberships. The business will cater to kids, as well as to serious climbers, Martines says. The gym plans to host certified bouldering competitions.
There’s only one other climbing gym in Asheville – ClimbMax in downtown Asheville. But bouldering/rock climbing/free climbing is growing quickly in popularity, Holoschak says, so it’s time for another option in Asheville.
Good luck to Iron Palm Bouldering!
