Mountain Moral Monday event set for Oct. 24 in downtown Asheville

Rev. William J. Barber

Mountain Moral Monday, an event billed as a nonpartisan rally aimed at highlighting “destructive policies enacted by the N.C. General Assembly,” returns to downtown Asheville from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 24.

The event will be held at Pack Square Park in downtown Asheville and will feature Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, President of the state’s NAACP and grassroots leader of the Moral Monday Movement.

Three years ago, protesters began gathering at the N.C. General Assembly building in Raleigh to protest the actions of the Republican-led Legislatures. Hundreds of people have been arrested in a movement dubbed “Moral Monday.”

Asheville was the site of its first Mountain Moral Monday in 2013, and an estimated 10,000 people gathered. The following year, an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 people gathered in downtown.

This year’s event will focus on “laws passed by the current state legislature that reversed years of progress in education, health care, voting rights, women’s rights, racial justice and environmental protection,” according to a press release.

Here’s the Facebook announcement:

Asheville-Buncombe County NAACP, Mountain People’s Assembly, regional NAACP Branches and a coalition of WNC organizations will host the return to Asheville of Mountain Moral Monday, a non-partisan event that will highlight the destructive policies enacted by the NC General Assembly while strongly focusing on the voter empowerment campaign, “It’s Our Time, It’s Our Vote.” The event will take place in Pack Square Park in downtown Asheville and will feature Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, President NC NAACP and grassroots leader of the Moral Monday Movement. Additional speakers will include voices from all over WNC addressing the important issues facing the people of NC, and the country, in this important election year! Please join us! SHARE this event on your page and throughout your network of family, friends and business associates! Lots of VOLUNTEERS are needed. Please go here to sign up!

Hey Tim How is the election going for your buddies? Keep on writing because you are so instrumental in keeping Republicans in power. You did such a great job with Tim Moffitt! Between you and the other local Republican intellectual giant in the county, Chad Nesbitt, the GOP is going places. Keep on telling us how you believe in Trump and McCrory and their shared values. You are the perfect poster child for Republican Party.

Nice shout-out for Deborah Ross in the NYTimes this morning:

Dr. Barber is an American hero. It is sad that the idea of treating one another with dignity and respect, and being kind, is considered by some to be partisan. The right-wing hate mongers now talk highly of Dr. King, but when he was fighting for social justice, like Dr. Barber, their ilk hated and denigrated him. Same with Ali. People love to rewrite history.

“Borderline vulgur,” The Peck says.

Barry, this one is worth a look.

Tim Peck October 14, 2016 - 8:04 am

Oh, for joy. Another nonpartisan rally in Asheville.

And there it is again: a welcome change of subject.

Peter Robbins October 17, 2016 - 10:12 am

You brought up the topic of joy, Mr. Peck. I think Chris was just trying to illustrate it through representative facial expression.

Tim Peck October 21, 2016 - 7:57 am

Wow. Your dishonesty is borderline vulgar. Who is this thread is on-topic? I count one, the first one. No. This thread is about me. May it continue to be so.

“Borderline vulgur,” The Peck says.

Barry, this one is worth a look.

Peter Robbins October 21, 2016 - 6:18 pm

Illuminating. In what publication did this distinguished commentary appear?

chris October 21, 2016 - 7:51 pm

Citizen Times. It was in response to a Boyle column on Trump’s “locker room talk” remark.

Got deleted the next day (by the moderators, I assume, but it’s possible Timmay deleted the whole subthread and started over, as is his wont). But I screencapped it for posterity.

Barry Summers October 22, 2016 - 9:41 pm

OK, that one was worth looking at. Someone should tell Ms. Hall that this is just Tim’s way of admitting he’s lost the argument, poor little monkey.

Tim Peck October 26, 2016 - 7:54 am

Hey. Guess what the subject is today. You progressives have such a range.

chris October 26, 2016 - 8:48 am

Of course you’re the subject, Timmay! You make sure of it! Gotta get paid, dontcha? Shill.

Tim Peck November 22, 2016 - 7:51 am

Is this thread about me again? How delightful. You progressives always deliver the juice.

chris November 22, 2016 - 3:44 pm

Wow, you showed up just in time. Have you been in a stupor for the last month?

Tim Peck November 23, 2016 - 10:21 am

No. You?

chris November 23, 2016 - 6:31 pm

So you have no excuse for your dipsh*ttery.

I see. Carry on.
