North Carolina: Moore Doesn’t Plan to Challenge Burr

Former state Treasurer Richard Moore (D) announced that he has no plans to run against US Sen. Richard Burr (R) next year. Moore ran a respectable (40%) but losing race for governor last year in the Democratic Primary against now-Gov. Beverly Perdue (D). The other likely Democratic contenders are state Attorney General Roy Cooper and US Rep. Heath Shuler of the 11th District (Asheville, etc.). Shuler is currently building his reputation among conservatives by opposing key Obama initiatives, including the stimulus package and the omnibus appropriations bill, which included a pro-abortion provision that Shuler opposes. Meanwhile, a Public Policy Polling (D) survey shows that incumbent Burr has large leads against two fairly weak potential challengers, but polls under 50% in both matchups. Burr led former state Sen. Cal Cunningham (D) 46% to 27% and led former US Senate candidate Jim Neal (D) 44% to 33%. Neal got 18% to Kay Hagan’s 60% in last year’s Democratic US Senate primary.
