Moogfest Day 1: More miscellany

More of what was going on Friday at Moogfest 2010:

-The Moogfest 2010 crowd is 98 percent white, with an average age of about 22. (My estimations.)

-Despite Moogfest’s ban on glowsticks, they still got into the big venues, and were still whipped around along with beer, water and the occasional article of clothing during the bouncing, throbbing dance parties that ensued.

-The one police action I saw came about 12:20 p.m. in the alley running next to the Vanderbilt Apartments. Here’s the rundown I got from a police friend: cops say a guy sitting on the street in an alcove, doing something with a baggie. They approached. First he flinched, then he decided to fight. The young dude, who appeared pretty beefy, ended up face down on the cold hard pavement, with blood streaming down his face. At least five or six officers responded to the scene, as did an ambulance for treatment. Note: I did not take his picture.

–Best costume so far: the nearly naked girl at the Asheville Civic Center. She sported thigh-high black boots, a flesh-toned pair of boy shorts, and strategically placed red flowers on her crotch, abs and breasts. She also wore a fun party attitude. Nothing else.

-The afore-mentioned giant throbbing dance parties inside the Civic Center were fun, but nothing beat DJ Bowie spinning discs for a small party crowd at the Moogaplex. Too much fun.

–Nortec Collective was simply stellar. Their trumpet man was the best I’ve ever heard since hearing Al Hirt in New Orleans before he passed. That’s saying something.

-Time of first man down on a bad trip at Moogfest, from what I spotted: 7:30 p.m. Moogfest officially started at 6 p.m.

-Asheville bar making the biggest killing off Moogfest 2010: The Bier Garden, hands down. With the Moogaplex just around the corner inside the Haywood Park Hotel complex, the Bier Garden was slammed the entire night.
