Student’s got a gun
A 17-year-old Ashvegas High School student was caught with a loaded handgun at school on Monday, and Michelle Boudin was there to tell us all about it.

The high school principal got a call from a parent on Thursday, Boudin said, after the parent’s kid saw or heard about the gun on the bus home. School officials were going to act on Friday, but the weapon-wielding student didn’t show. The kid was at school on Monday, and school officials swooped in and found the gun in the outside pocket of his backpack.

The student wouldn’t say why he had the gun, school officials told Boudin, who added that the kid is in jail, charged as an adult with a felony. The kid was on probation for communicating threats, Boudin said.

Deputies cleared
Remeber this past July 13, when Buncombe County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed two people in separate incidents? Well, both deputies have been cleared of any wrongdoing. In one case, a deputy shot a teen in Leicester that was threatening suicide. In another case, deputies shot a man in north Buncombe County who the cops said was threatening them with a gun.

The beetles are back
Those fall lady bugs are back, WLOSers told us. They’re actually called multi-colored Asian lady beetles. The only way to keep them out of your house is to have really good seals on your windows and doors. Don’t use pesticides – the little buggers are good in your garden and eat aphids.

Jobs coming to Haywood County?
Terrie Foster had a weird story about the Haywood Chamber of Commerce advertising for jobs at an accounting firm that may never come to the county.

Haywood officials claim they’re competing with a South Carolina county for a major accounting and finance firm that will bring 200 jobs, Foster said. But no official could tell Terrie the name of the company.

It was a useless report.
