Two dead in Transy
Russ “Beefcake” Bowen told us that two men died after a bucket truck on a home construction site tipped over and threw the men to the ground. Russ said it appeared that the truck had been parked on uneven ground when it tipped.
Cold weather and crops
Sheraldo said that the cold weather of the next couple of days could severely harm apple and strawberry crops. Apple trees, in particular, are in full bloom and could be devastated by temperatures that could drop to as low as 22 on Saturday night, Sheraldo said. One strawberry farmer told Sheraldo that he’ll spray water on his crop to coat the plants in insulating ice.

Boy’s legs stolen, returned
Cherub Charu told us a bizarre story about a Canton boy whose prosthetic legs were stolen from his mama’s van last week. The boy had both legs partially amputated because he had club feet. Matthew used the specially made prosthetic legs for swimming.
Charu said two people were arrested and charged with stealing Matthew’s legs. She said one person was a minor and the other was a 20-year-old. Charu didn’t name the 20-year-old. And there was no explanation on how police found the suspects.

More on the Woodfin power plant
Holly Headache said Progress Energy is looking at its options after the town of Woodfin voted down a proposed power plant.
Progress Energy told Holly that it hasn’t decided if it will go to court, or just find another location that will likely cost more, which means the utility will probably have to pass the costs on to the consumer. Town Manager Jason Young told Holly the board was concerned about the proposed plant’s impact on the health and safety of local residents. Progress said it needs the supplemental plant built by 2010.

polo girl…you must not get around as much as you say. It’s not just Asheville. Bag checks are routine all over the US now. Theme parks, sporting events, concerts, pretty much anywhere there’s a crowd in a controlled space.
You think all they were looking for was drugs? Wake up.
I was at the Civic Centre for the Wynton Marsalis concert a few weeks ago (hardly the hotbed of inquity that lingers in more vivid imaginations, as if there were hash freaks and opium eaters in the crowd they must’ve been walking with canes)…the security guard asked to check my handbag. I protested, asking, "Must you?" and she said "yes."
I travel all over the Mid-East and Asia and have never received that treatment anywhere.
Only in Asheville.
When will we grow up?
For another rant, I’d like to say I’m sick of seeing people eat corndogs and swill cheap wine in the Civic Center. Have some dignity!
