This is the third time that the company has moved the release date of the movie, which is directed by Jared Hess and stars Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson and Jason Sudekis. The movie was rescheduled to “allow the company to focus on its recapitalization and give this film the proper attention and support it deserves,” reports deadline.com, quoting a company statement.
The new release date puts Masterminds up against some serious competition. From deadline.com:
Here’s what Relativity faces on October 9. The previous weekend brings the Ridley Scott-directed The Martian with Matt Damon, and the distributor has been scheduled to open the Halle Berry starrer Kidnap on October 9 (presumably that would move). Also opening that Friday is the Joe Wright-directed Hugh Jackman starrer Pan and the Danny Boyle-directed Steve Jobs starring Michael Fassbender as the Apple genius. Also, Sony Pictures and TriStar opens the Robert Zemeckis-directed The Walk, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. That’s a lot of competition, but not a lot of madcap comedy.
Masterminds filmed in downtown Asheville last summer. Locations included inside the U.S. Cellular Center and out in front of the BB&T building. The production also filmed at locations in small towns around Western North Carolina.

October is traditionally the dumping ground for crap movies. Not good enough for summer and not worth hanging onto until the busy holiday season.
Yep, sounds like they have themselves a stinker, which is not at all surprising given the stars.
Maybe Kim Jong Un will rattle his sabre, setting off a “grassroots” movement to release the film? Then we can all rush to see it to show support for freedom of speech. It will turn a profit before audiences realize that they’ve been had again.
