Mama’s Day 10K set for May 7 at Asheville’s Carrier Park

The first ever Mama’s Day 10K, an event that will raise money for a new Asheville nonprofit called Mama Maisha working to help mothers and their babies in Tanzania stay healthy. The race will start at Carrier Park. More from race organizers:

Pregnancy complication-related deaths are rare in developed countries, but in Tanzania, one mother dies every single hour. Mama Maisha provides life-saving supplies, support and education for women in need. Our Maternal Health Advocates are local women trained to facilitate women’s groups, organize community action, make home visits and promote public health.

Early Bird Registration is only $39.99. That’s $5 off of regular registration. So register now! 10k race starts at 10 a.m. The event also includes a 1K fun run.

Asheville OB/GYN Reta Graham and her husband, physician Jeff Graham, started Mama Maisha to reduce the maternal mortality rate in Tanzania. They note that their work saves lives “two by two.” The nonprofit funds maternal health advocates, who travel to villages to educate residents and promote public health.
