Malaprop’s Bookstore and Cafe will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Jan. 1 with a big annual sale. The independently owned bookstore is an Asheville institution.

Emoke B’Racz opened the store in 1982. It had a focus on poetry, feminist issues, Southern and regional writers and has branched out from there. The store hosts readings by writers from around the U.S. B’Racz also owns Down Books and News on Lexington, a shop she opened in 1988.

Publishers Weekly named Malaprop’s its bookseller of the year in 2000, the first Southern seller to nab that honor.

Visit Malaprop’s and wish them a happy anniversary. And support your local independents.
