I was walking around downtown yesterday when I spotted three cute dogs in front of City Bakery. I asked the owner if she minded me taking a picture. She said no, go for it, and btw, this one’s going to be on the Regis and Kelly show. Then she ducked inside for some coffee.
I popped off a few shots and moved along. I’d heard of a local dog being somewhat of a celebrity, but didn’t think much of it.
Asheville Citizen-Times columnist and reporter John Boyle comes with the full story today.
“They want her to count audience members – men vs. women – so we’ve been working hard on that,” said Maggie’s owner, Jesse Treff, adding that the live element throws a whole twist into Maggie’s performance. “Whatever will happen will happen.”
Maggie, 10, has a knack for basic math, as well as a repertoire of tricks including fetching a tissue when someone sneezes. She’s appeared on Oprah, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, a couple of Animal Planet shows, as well as on television in Japan, France and England.
The Regis & Kelly show is Thursday, July 30. Treff and Maggie will travel to New York on July 28, staying at the swanky Empire Hotel.
Maggie also has become sort of a celebrity “spokesdog” for the Asheville Humane Society, appearing on literature and making some appearances.

Get back to blogging, Ash. I am offically tired to of this cute, little, frickin’ dog. Seriously. I do not care any more, even if it CAN count!

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Jason…..what’s going on? Are you sick, out of town, vacation? No posts here since last Friday (4 days ago)! Love this blog and check it daily, but so frustrating when there is nothing new. Then you come back and there is a ton of new stuff, so much so that some important news items get buried and overlooked.
Maybe, just maybe, you have decided not to publish for a while to starve the remaining reporters at the ACT of news tidbits. I know for a fact that they all follow your blog and try and cherry pick items for their own use. Good example is John Boyle who ran the Maggie the Dog piece days after you. How pathetic is that? Seriously, I know you need a break, I just wish you would let your readers know when you are going to be AWOL!
I’ve seen Maggie in action in person and it’s really quite remarkable.
One of my friends met Maggie today. At her request, Maggie correctly added 4+4.
