Karen Chavez of the Asheville Citizen-Times blogs it at girlsgoneoutdoors:

Any Ian Somerhalder fans in Asheville?

One of the stars of the CW network’s popular “Vampire Diaries,” Somerhalder is more than a brooding, blood-gulping vampire. He is also passionate about sinking his teeth into a good environmental cause.

Who knew? Well, he is a big environmental and animal rights’ activist, so he would fit in well here in Asheville.

Somerhalder, who also appeared in the TV show “Lost,” will be one of the featured speakers at the “Beyond Coal: A Rally for Our Future” Aug. 24 at Pack Square Park in downtown.

The rally, hosted by the Asheville Beyond Coal coalition, which includes the WNC Alliance, the Sierra Club, SouthWings and Interfaith Power and Light, will be filmed by the Showtime network as part of its coverage of the “Years of Living Dangerously” documentary series, said Anna Jane Joyner, WNC Alliance campaign coordinator.

Showtime also filmed the Care of Creation Candlelight Vigil on Earth Day in Asheville. The series will explore the human impact of climate change in a collaboration between Hollywood actors and producers, along with leading journalists, reporting on those affected by and seeking solutions to global warming.
