9 Local bands to perform Magnetic Fields’ 69 Love Songs Valentine’s Weekend at the Grey Eagle

Asheville, NC — When one goes out for a concert around Valentine’s Day it isn’t surprising to hear some, or even most, of the songs devoted to the topic of love. It’s unlikely, however, that there would be 69 songs performed, and that they would all be about love—but that’s exactly what will happen at the Grey Eagle on February 13th when nine area bands will perform the three album release 69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields.

Two area producers, Chall Gray and James Richards, have teamed with Harvest Records and the Grey Eagle to make this unique event come together. “We’re very excited,” Gray said of the event, “not just to work with Harvest and the Grey Eagle, but to have such a stellar lineup of bands performing these songs.”

69 Love Songs, a 3-cd set released in 1999, is considered by many to be a landmark achievement for The Magnetic Fields, and critically regarded as one of the best albums of the last two decades. 69 Love Songs contains songs performed in a variety of styles, from jazz to surf rock, from synth pop to country ballad to Irish folk song, and a diverse group of area musicians will come together for this unique performance. The performers will each perform a set of between 7 and 9 songs, and the range runs the gamut from local keyboard wizard Aaron Price’s group Vendetta, to indie band Electric Owls, popular lo-fi folk band Pilgrim, quirky pop trio Now You See Them, to Angi West, Joti Marra and Sarah Brown’s collaboration Foxteeth.

This show will undoubtedly be one of the most interesting and exciting Valentine’s events in years.
