I’ve heard that Kimmel & Associates, a national executive search company specializing in the construction industry with more than 100 employees here in Asheville, has laid off 30 people. That probably shouldn’t come as a big surprise, considering the national economy and the slow-down in the construction industry, but it definitely hurts.
We’re going to be hearing more and more about this type of job shedding as we move through this recession or whatever we’re in. All the job losses will add up, and the bottom line is a painful economic restructuring that can take a mental, emotional and even physical toll on a human being.
What other lay-offs, plant closings or job cuts have you heard about in and around Asheville?

yes, Facts?, when bad information gets out, it can be harmful. i don’t want that. i appreciate you reigning me in.
I can respect that. I doubt that Kimmel would lie about something like that. It is to easy to find out.
I just wanted to let you know. Many bloggers do not every "put on the breaks" and just write whatever. The problem is that many of these "storys" take flight and the truth is never told. We saw alot of this in the last political campain.
As a whole you do a pretty good job of observation with little to no spin.
Facts?, i’ll work harder to explain to people the difference between posts that i know are true, versus posts that contain un-verified information. when information is not verified, i usually ask for someone else to confirm the information, or i state specifically that the information is coming from an anonymous poster. that’s the crazy thing with the web — anybody can post anything under the veil of anonymity.
you can be just as critical of the Citizen-Times in this case. they have one source, and it’s the company. there’s no other independent verification, and the company has a vested interest in downplaying bad news. So do you take their word for it, or the word of somebody in the community who might have an axe to grind?
i’m not claiming a "scoop." there’s no such thing in this day and age with the way information is transferred. but the other media — name WLOS and the Citizen-Times, pick up what i post here and treat as though i’m trying to break news. i’m not. i’m sharing what i’m seeing and hearing as a member of this community.
I am not with the paper or media. You are posting a blog that is true. However you are posting it like it is news. You have some responsibility to be at least close to the truth, don’t you think?
People should not go around just blogging as though it is fact and then use the excuse "It is a blog". It is like the teachers that say some racist or stupid comment to a student and then hide behind "I was trying to spark a debate on the topic".
I think most of what you post is pretty good. I just think when you are wrong you should admit it. You even post a different number on topix.
You can admit it. You are just trying to drive blog traffic by claiming you scooped the story.
hey facts, this is a blog, not a newspaper. get over it.
i have to say that it sure is fun to watch the local newspaper and tv folks jump when i post something here.
So to be clear, you reported the incorrect rumor correctly? Looks like you went 0 for 2 on rumor-mongering yesterday…
To Facts?: I am not incorrect. Here’s why: I’m just passing along what I heard from a friend, a friend who is an excellent source of information. I’m not claiming her information is fact, I’m just passing along what she said.
You are incorrect in your post about Kimmel. 12 is the correct number.
Retail stores at the Asheville Mall have cut way back on the number of temporary staff hired for the holidays. Many of the stores hired no seasonal workers at all this year.
I heard of layoffs at Daniels Graphics.
The Biltmore Company is planning a huge lay-off of workers at both the headquarters office, and the estate, just after the first of the year. This will be far more extensive than the usual reduction of seasonal workers. The administrative offices downtown have always had far too many employees, and many of them are well-paid people who have been there quite a while, but contribute very little to revenue generation. Revenue for the company is way off even their already paired-down forecasts. Many of Biltmore’s ventures have been failures, e.g. branding home decor items. Also the high gas prices of the summer really hurt. Execs also made the mistake of spending large amounts to rebrand the company with marketing and advertising expenses that did not deliver visitors or shoppers. There is indeed a reason why marketing director Elizabeth Sims was pushed-out of the company. In keeping with their secretive ways, I expect the Biltmore Co. to try and cover up the scale of their cutbacks and layoffs. The reality is that things are not well with this company..
