For all those Republicans out there worried about who is going to run against U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler, local newspaper columnist John Boyle is stepping into the breach. Boyle announces in his column today that he’ll be a candidate.
From Mr. Boyle:
The Republican Party is in a bit of a fix, so I’m here to help by announcing my candidacy. Now, I’m a registered “unaffiliated,” and I’m probably not nearly conservative enough for the Republicans, but what the heck — I like attention, and I’ve got political experience.
I’ll have you know I ran a write-in campaign for mayor of Asheville in 2001 and snapped up tons of votes. OK, I got six votes, but each one weighed 333.3 pounds.
I don’t have a platform yet or any real solid ideas, but I’m sure that’ll come with time and a few beers one Saturday night.
I could tell (Bill) Sabo was chomping at the bit to be my campaign manager, so I went ahead and asked. Need to get that money rolling in, you know.
“It all depends on whether hell is frozen over yet,” he said.
Man, I like that enthusiasm.

Johnny Boyle is soooo far from being a Republican OR a Democrat, that it’s almost as amusing as he is. He makes brilliantly snide comments about all of them, but in the end, he votes thoughtfully. Frankly, after being his friend for nigh 8 years, I’m tempted to vote for him. But, sorry Johnny B. There’s too much at stake for us flaming liberals! I’m going left of Mickey Mahaffey this go ’round!
Cecil, ha!
Lou, umm, it’s a joke, dude. Lighten up.
It’s official..no one cares!
I always knew John Boy was a Republican. Just felt it in my bones.
Glad he’s finally out of the closet.
