How healthy is Western North Carolina’s health care industry?

Share

With all the talk of lay-offs and a wilting economy in and around Ashevile, perhaps the most telling indicator is the health of the area health care industry. Aside from tourism, the real jobs engine for the region is the health care industry.

So what’s happening out there? There are thousands of health care employees in Asheville and WNC. What are you seeing?

I’ve seen a few recent stories about WestCare cutting jobs. Murphy Medical Center is laying off some people. The Haywood Regional Medical Center is still recovering from losing, then re-gaining, it’s Medicaid and Medicare funding over the summer.

What’s happening within Mission Hospitals? Within the public health care sector?

Hiring freeze at Mission from what I hear. Thanks so much for covering how the economy is hitting the mountains, it is a hard pill to swallow though.
