WLOSers got the scoop, about Gourmet Perks shutting down suddenly. Charu talked to employees, who decided to cook anyway. They set up in the parking lot and made breakfast for a few folks. The shop was popular with the young hippies, and it often hosted all-ages shows with up-and-coming bands.
Here’s the WLOS text with their video:
A popular Asheville coffee shop is forced to close it’s doors, but not without letting patrons know what’s going on.
Gourmet Perks on Merrimon Ave. closed yesterday.
But today, employees set up shop in the parking lot cooking leftover food for anyone who stopped by.
The owner says high food and fuel costs contributed to the closure.
The owner and employees hope someone will buy the business.
Employees are also trying to find a way to run it as a co-op.

Every time I went in there, I never felt punk rock enough. Apparently neither did the workers because I always got crap service and it would take near forever to make a simple vanilla latte. They made me 15 minutes late to work one day and I literally work around the corner. Fools.
I have SUCH fond college memories of gourmet perks, but I hate to say that in the last 6 months every time I went I was seriously disappointed. Negative, inattentive staff – which I wouldn’t have cared about if the food and drinks were any good.
Agreed, bobaloo. Always a very friendly crew working there. This is another big loss for Asheville.
Craziness! I was just there yesterday morning. The owner seemed so chipper!
Good coffee and great hangover food. Terribly disappointing.
