Goodbye, Crazybird

Y’all probably heard that fire struck the Ideal Market Cafe in West Ashvegas on Saturday night. We decided to cruise by and get a firsthand look at the damage, and were surprised to see this sign in the window. From the sound of it, these folks aren’t planning to be back. Well that sucks.

The Ideal was a great little eatery. Very quiet, a chill place to hang on Haywood Road, right down the street from the Westville Pub and the West End Bakery. It never did gangbusters business, but it seemed to be doing ok. Their Crazybird sandwich was to die for – tons of turkey slathered with some great relish, piled high on toasted bread and heated up. Damn, I’m gonna miss that place.

From a peek inside, it looked (and smelled) like mostly smoke damage. The front door had been smashed and was covered with a piece of plywood. We couldn’t see any major fire damage. The newspaper said that Moody’s jewelers next door to the cafe suffered some damage as well. No word on whether congressional candidate Heath Shuler’s office suffered any damage (it’s atop the jewelry shop). Also, no details on the cause of the fire.

My sources say only a bit of a smoky scent in the offices of my favorite athlete turned political candidate. Have I mentioned that he’s a total hunk?

Terrible news.

I’ll contact the Shuler people to determine any damage to their office.

Anyone called Taylor to find out if he smells of lighter fluid?

So sad. I was dreaming of crazy birds just last night.

Well, that’s depressing. I just went there for lunch on Friday and was impressed by how friendly the staff was. I received an e-mail this morning that someone at Westville is planning a benefit for the staff, and the e-mail made it sound like they’re planning on re-opening. Of course the e-mail itself contained second-hand info, but I’m hoping that the sign on the door is just poorly worded and that they will indeed be reopening in the future.
