Girl-on-girl action – that’s what it was all about Saturday night at Asheville’s first-ever flat track roller derby bout down at Carrier Park.
The Blue Ridge Rollergirls have been organizing and practicing for months, and last night was the first public bout. And they did it right. Summer Shovin’ saw a match between the Wham Bam Thank You Ma’ams and the Candy Apple Razorblades. They had the uniforms. They had the safety gear and officials. They had the music and the play-by-play announcers with good patter. They had a great venue at the riverfront park.
And they had the crowd. The place was packed with hundreds of fans who came out to see the rollergirls do their thing. We’ve never seen so many damn tattoos in one place, and Ashvegas has plenty of tattoos. The crowd jeered the villian skaters – one chick, when she took the lead position, flipped up her skirt to show a pair of white panties sporting the taunt “Bite Me” – and cheered the home team. All great fun.
The skating was a bit tentative at first, but the girls got warmed up and their competitive juices started flowing. There were a couple of good take-downs, but no blood and no broken bones (a good thing).
The Blue Ridge Rollergirls were a huge hit Saturday night. Don’t miss the next jam.
