First ever Asheville Coffee Expo coming to River Arts District Oct. 1

A new food festival is coming up soon, organized by Stu Helm, AVL Food Fan, and Angie Rainey of

The 2016 Asheville Coffee Expo will be happening in the River Arts District on October 1st, 2016, and the whole coffee community is abuzz about this fun, free, fully-caffeinated festival, the first ever of it’s kind in Asheville!

According to co-organizers Stu Helm (“The Food Fan”) and Angie Rainey (from, the event is going to take place on International Coffee Day and will be a celebration of all things coffee-related, with vendors, demos, contests and competitions for baristas and the public alike!

A latte art contest, (judged by River Arts District artists), a Cappuccino competition, and a Free-Style Espresso Throw-Down will challenge local and visiting Baristas to do their best to win prizes and accolades for themselves and their associates, while uphill coffee-sack-races in Murray Hill Park will give the public of all ages an opportunity to win prizes and have fun, while supporting a good cause.

“A suggested entry fee of $1 or more will be collected from each sack-racer, and 100% of all entry fees will be donated to Buncombe County Special Olympics,” Helm said, “Kids can enter for free of course, and we want to make sure everyone knows that the Asheville Coffee Expo is a family friendly event.”

“My daughter is more excited about it than anyone I know!” adds Angie Rainey, who’s company Coffee Crate — a small batch, locally roasted coffee subscription service — puts her in contact with many North Carolina coffee roasters, as well as cafes, and bakeries. Her coffee subscription mailings always include a delicious, locally made snack of some kind!

Food will be available at the Asheville Coffee Expo, from local bakers and sweets makers, including Geraldine’s, The Hop, and others. There will be ceramics and other art from River Arts District artists available, and of course there will plenty of coffee, tea, decaf, chai, and other delicious beverages on hand!

This is a FREE event, open to the public, and is for anyone and everyone who enjoys coffee
