Press release here:
Support Evergreen Community Charter School’s environmental education curriculum while having a good time at the school’s seventh annual CAFÉ (Caring Artists for Evergreen) event, held from 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Saturday March 6 at the The Venue, on 21 North Market St., in Asheville.
Tickets are $30 in advance/$35 at the door and include a diverse assortment of fare from local restaurants, a silent auction, and musical entertainment from the country-rock band Lucky, featuring Katharine Whalen of the Squirrel Nut Zippers.
Ned Ryan Doyle, a leader in sustainable living, is master of ceremonies for CAFÉ 7, a green event. Doyle hosts the WNCW 88.7 radio show Our Southern Community and produces the Southern Energy & Environment Expo.
“A signature piece of this event is the fabulous food and drink donated by Asheville’s finest eateries and breweries, and the auction includes art, products and services from local businesses,” said Eleanor Ashton, Evergreen’s development and communication director. “In addition to supporting a good cause, CAFÉ provides a chance to win weekend get-a-ways, spa services, beautiful jewelry, crafts, sporting equipment and much more.”
In keeping with the theme Lucky Number 7, this year’s CAFÉ will also auction a special art collection by seven local artists – Richard Oversmith, Karen Ives, Rob Pulleyn, Jeff Kinzel, David Earl, Jimmy O’Neal and nationally acclaimed flute maker Chris Abell. An installation by O’Neal will also be showcased at the event.
CAFÉ, Evergreen’s primary fundraiser, helps support its innovative environmental educational curriculum. The school is widely known for its environmental initiatives, including biodiesel-run activity buses, rain gardens, solar panels, butterfly and organic gardens, and verma (worm) composting. In 2008, Evergreen was named one of the top 10 greenest schools in America in a national competition sponsored by Ellen DeGeneres. In January, middle school science teacher Stuart Miles was named Charter School Teacher of the Year, and last year Evergreen achieved SACS CASI accreditation through AdvancED, an organization that advances excellence in education worldwide.
