Does Boyer have the inside line to replace weather chief Cuevas at WLOS?

Share

With WLOS Chief Meterologist Mike Cuevas on his way out at the end of this month, WLOSers have been busy collecting resumes and most certainly interviewing for his replacement. Now comes word to Ashvegas that a former WLOSer may be coming back as Cuevas’ replacement.

Anyone remember Jason Boyer? He worked as a weather sooth-sayer for WLOS for 18 months in 2002-03. I don’t know how old he was, but he looked like a teen-ager and may even have had braces at the time. His on-air personality was enthusiastic and he seemed to truly geek-out on the weather, which I respect.

Boyer is now forecasting the weather for KWGN in Denver, which is a big market and which has probably served as a great training ground for him. I’m getting word that he may have the inside track on replacing Cuevas. Can anyone confirm that he’s applied for job?

Guess we’ll have to wait and see. Who would you like to see become WLOS’ chief meterologist?

You can follow Boyer on Twitter here.

His Linked-In resume is here.

I’m sorry but Jason Boyer hasn’t gotten ONE SINGLE storm forecast right since arriving at WLOS! About a month ago he predicted a huge rain storm would turn east and skirt us to the South; we got approx. 4" of torrential rain from that "skirt". Weatherman John Cessarich on CH. 4 got it right. Boyer was wrong. Again. On this past huge snow storm of 12/18 ol’ Jason predicted 1" to 3" south of Asheville. I’m dealing with 17". Wouldn’t it be nice if he’d at least apologize to the viewers when he botched a forecast badly but he’s WRONG so often I guess he’d be apologizing CONSTANTLY! I know this, I have NO FAITH in his forecasts! I’ll tune to Cessarich when I want a correct forecast!

Morgan King, I’m sorry who is he? Really, I would like to know!

Dear Media Follower,
My problem with Julie Blunder is that she speaks too fast, often mispronounces words (i.e. Sath for South, Rullerford for Rutherfordton, Old F*rt for Old Fort), overuses her hands, often smiles at inappropriate times, and is prone to repeat the same words over and over during a weather segment. In addition, she is bad to motion to a particular town or city and call out a temperature that is different from what is on the screen. Finally, during the cooking segment, she appears to have little cooking knowledge, usually just stands with her hands clasped and often appears uncomfortable. Sometimes she even seems to have difficulty making conversation with the guest chef.
As far as taking a "potshot"…we are ALL entitled to our own opinion. This includes you as well. So if you think she is the best…maybe you could recommend her to Good Morning America. They have an anchor spot opening soon.

I think the majority of people I know would choose to live and work in Denver and Colorado over Asheville and Western NC any day. Denver is a huge city and the Rocky Mountains are incredible. For a meteorologist, I’d think the weather there would be much more interesting to cover. Also, I’m sure they pay much more in that market than they do here.

To Weather Watcher…

Outside of taking a cheap potshot with no substance to back it up, what’s your issue with Julie Wunder? She’s a solid meteorologist, and BY FAR the best one on the WLOS staff. Quite frankly, after Bettes and Bob Child, I think Julie Wunder is the best weather people to WLOS in the past 15 years. And by all accounts, a really nice person.

Most likely, Boyer is making more where he is doing weekends, than he would even get offered at WLOS. Denver is a much bigger market and pays well.

I for one watch Cuevas everyday. I think he is too good for this market myself, and will probably go on to bigger and better things. Wish you well Mike!

Yuh THINK you have seen Candice Little doing commercials? Are you really a 13watcher? Fake blondie is on TV in this market more than when she actually tried to do news at WLOS. Candice now shills ad nauseum for Hunter Auto – looks more like a former Miss Georgia than ever – and some of the commercials are even produced to look like newscasts. That is called whoring. Sorry to say Bob Caldwell is also playing the "anything for a buck" game. I thought he had proudly and graciously retired. Too bad.

Getting back to the Chief Meteorologist situation, they don’t call it ABC 13 for nothing. It stands for "Anybody But Cuevas". Boyer, Child, the Hippie Dippie Weatherman – anybody! I cannot wait to see who it finally winds-up being.

And greenashevilleblogspot.com, what do you mean about Frank Kracher’s "mic was always distorted with feedback when he gave the news on WLOS"? I heard him crystal clear in my living room. Maybe you just need a new television set. ABC 13 certainly needs a new male anchor. Once again, your Honor, I rest my case on behalf of Frank Kracher.

Just because Boyer is in a bigger market doesn’t mean he’ll stay there over Asheville. Broadcast mets will often choose to go down in market size if it means a promotion to a chief position. The pay will often balance out or even go up. Boyer would be great in that role at WLOS. He’s younger, has a lot of energy, knows weather and has several years experience in this market and with winter weather in general. I hope WLOS makes an offer, that is, if Boyer is even talking to them and/or interested in coming back!

The absolute WORST person ever on the air at WLOS (and there have been many of them over the years) has got to be Candice Little. I think she worked at Channel 13 during the time Boyer did the weekend weather..

Candice Little could neither read the stories or pronounce half the words. Typical of an ex-beauty pageant contestant. I saw here once in person and she had on so much make-up that she looked like a mannequin. I heard she went to Charlotte and think I’ve seen her doing commercials too.

bring back Ken Bostic!

I remember when Jason Boyer did the weather on WLOS a few years ago. I thought he was really professional and pleasant to watch. I like the fact that he is young, clearly smart, and comes across well delivering the weather on tv. so I’d be happy if he came back here. But ‘m betting he stays in Denver — a bigger market and bigger mountains.

Ricky September 4, 2009 - 1:19 am

I say bring back Morgan King. He worked the weekend shift for about 2 weeks a couple of years ago. Return of the King!

Weather Watcher September 3, 2009 - 9:59 pm

As long as the Chief Meterologist is not Julie Blunder…

By the way…WLOS would not bring Bob Child back…

greenashevilleblogspot.com September 3, 2009 - 8:52 pm

Bob Child? He always forgot to turn his mic on.

greenashevilleblogspot.com September 3, 2009 - 7:20 pm

The big question is will WLOS ever grow up and outgrow the braces? It’s amazing how much more professional even the weekend news is in my new home market- which isn’t really much different size wise. Kind of like going from Bush stumbling through press conferences to Obama’s eloquent prose. Not even Frank Kracher can really help the WLOSers. The mic was always distorted with feedback when he gave the news on WLOS.

Mountain Man September 3, 2009 - 7:19 pm

I got no problem at all with Jason Boyer taking over the reigns at WLOS. He has a lot of experience working in the Southern Appalachian Region. Before the previous stints in Asheville and Chatanooga, he was a weekend Met for one of the stations in the Tri-CIties TN/VA market…so he definitely knows what can happen around here, especially in the winter months. I say give it to him.

I’m curious though…who else has applied for the job?

I’ve said it before and will say it again…I would love to see Bob Child back on WLOS…he not currently working in TV, might as well lure him back with a fat contract.

frank September 3, 2009 - 6:47 pm

Jason Boyer is an excellent on-air meteorologist and personality. He went from Asheville to Chattanooga and on to Denver. They would have to make him a really good offer to get him back to a small tv market like Asheville. I know that he is engaged in Denver and am doubtful that he would be willing to come back to a small city. I’m guessing the next stop for him would be a really large tv market on the east or west coasts.

realityczech September 3, 2009 - 6:46 pm

Jason Boyer was certainly very young during his first go-round at WLOS, Ash, and it sure looked like he was wearing braces on my TV set. They are obviously gone in that photo you posted. He seemed a little "green", but I still think he did a decent job on weekends. I’ll bet a market the size of Denver has seasoned him. I think Jason would be a good addition to the ABC 13 news team. Now all that station has to do is dump Larry Blunt in favor of Frank Kracher. I have said it here before and will say it again. Frank has returned to Asheville and should be back at the anchor desk with Darcel and Tammy. Frank always came across as down to earth, exhibited good energy and chemistry with the rest of the on-air staff and was the right fit for our mountain community. Larry Blunt is, well, "blunt" and boring.
