Asheville Citizen-Times: Entrepreneur wants to start ‘pubcycle’ biz in town

Share

From the Asheville Citizen-Times:

It soon could be possible for a dozen beer-sipping sightseers to sit around a mobile bar while pedaling through the streets of downtown.

Shawn Verbrugghe wants to start a business called Amazing Pubcycle, featuring an unusual, human-powered vehiclesometimes known as a trolley bike or cycle pub.

But first he’ll need the go-ahead from City Council, which is scheduled Tuesday to consider granting a franchise agreement for the trolley bike tour service.

“My goal is to bring a new element of fun to the city,” said Verbrugghe, an energy consultant who moved here from Minneapolis about six months ago. “People will love it. It’s very exciting to be pedaling in a bar-type vehicle sitting across from your friends.”

Go for it. Me and all my friends will participate and advertise for you guys. This is the best fun idea ever! Asheville will absolutely love it. This is a town that loves to have a good time.

You just gotta love living in this town! How hard would it be as your pub crawl goes into the night to pedal that thing around town with 12 other people! I wonder if it has dawned on anyone that you can get a DUI on a Bicycle.

Yeah, buy they’ll have a designated driver, the tour guide.

Nothing like a dozen pedaling fools to anger motorists. These bikes go like 7 mph and are 18 feet long. More like a slow trolley.

That would work great in RAD, bring it on.

No worries, these have motor-assists for the tough hills!

I predicted someone would try to open this in Asheville 6 months ago when I first saw it in Nashville. The difference? The terrain of Nashville is much more inviting and conducive.

Great idea! I’ve seen this in Savannah GA and would have loved to try it out! Perfect for tourists and locals, there are many areas like Patton ave around Pritchard park and college street where you would not need to worry about climbing hills. And in beer city USA, no less. Can’t believe we don’t already have this!

like a lawsuit in the making…doesn’t seem very safe for anyone involved, does it?

Whoever’s steering better damn well be sober. My neck is messed up for life because of a drunk driver.

Doug Sahm December 8, 2012 - 1:54 pm

It looks like a lot of fun and I’ll be rooting for it, but the terrain of Asheville just seems way too tough for that thing.

John December 8, 2012 - 1:34 pm

I can see it now. 12 drunk guys pissin and peddlin.

Pizzle December 8, 2012 - 11:38 am
