WLOSer Terrie “Pastyface” Foster held down the anchor duties Monday night. Here are a few of the stories she had to tell:
Breaking news: Inmates escape
Four inmates escaped from the Jackson County jail Monday, but three were caught. The cops were looking for the fourth. Details at 11.
Couple loses it all in fire
Every year, you can count on somebody to lose all their earthly possessions in a fire. And that’s exactly what happened this year to the Sutherland’s, a couple whose house on Kennedy Road in Weaverville caught on fire on Christmas Eve.
The couple blamed a faulty chimney. Despite what WLOSers said, it didn’t look like they lost it all. Their house was still standing, but sustained heavy smoke damage. Cherub Charu interviewed the couple at the Best Western in downtown Ashvegas, where they were receiving help from the Red Cross.
A CEO comes out on Christmas
WLOSers made a big deal out of Joe Damore, the Mission Hospital’s CEO, coming out on Christmas to slap workers on the back and deliver some toys to kids in the hospital. So what? And in other news, WLOSers told us that the hospital doesn’t close, and that emergency personnel, service industry employees, and even some people at WLOS, have to work on Christmas Day. Really?
Jewish people volunteer on Christmas
Local Jews volunteered at a number of service organizations on Christmas Day to give back to the community. They worked at ABCCM, Eliada Home, A-Hope and the Red Cross.
James Brown is dead
The hardest working man in show biz died on Christmas Day. James Brown died of heart failure after coming down with pneumonia. He was 73.
Big dinner in Hooterville
Jon “Punnyman” Le told us that some 600 people volunteered in Hendersonville on Christmas Day to feed some 3,000 at the annual Bounty of Bethlehem event at the Imaculatta school gym. Le got good quotes, with people describing the event as “the spirit of Christ on earth” and “an outpouring of caring.” Good for them.
Meanwhile, WLOSers showed us a much more subdued evet at the American Legion Post 47 in Waynesville, where a few vets got together for a dinner. Looked a bit grim.
Missing messiah
WLOSers kept teasing to a lame story near the end of the newscast: some lady in Bilmtore Park had the baby Jesus stolen from her hoity-toity nativity scene. She told the newspeople that she’d have to spend $400 to buy a whole new set just to replace the baby Jesus. She said it’s sad that the person who stole the figurine doesn’t know the true meaning of Christmas. She’s hoping to have the figurine returned by the end of Christmas Day. We’ll see.
Problems in the weather center
Jay Seltzerwater totally screwed up the weather forecast because he didn’t have his computers programmed correctly. He said Ashvegas will get a dusting of snow, while those at elevations of 3,500 feet and above could see 3 to 5 inches of snow. We’ll see.

baby jesus is back! wonderful story … found in a river and returned to His rightful owner over a week later! and miles away!
"She said it’s sad that the person who stole the figurine doesn’t know the true meaning of Christmas."
… and that the meaning of Christmas was more important than a statue. Yet, the stolen statue is newsworthy and she complains about having to pay $400 for a new set.
Also, I thought it was funny in the Mission Hospital CEO story, Terrie said "he often does it with his daughter." Meaning, of course, he often makes the hospital visits with her, but my friends and I had a good laugh at that.
