Carolina Runner reports that the first Spartan race for the Asheville area is set for August in Black Mountain at Grove Stone & Sand.

Many local runners are familiar with Grove Stone & Sand as the home of the Rock the Quarry Trail Race. Well now it’s also the site of a Reebok Spartan Race. On August 29, 2015 trail running meets mud running meets obstacle course meets cross fit. There are three flavors of Spartan Races and this one is a ‘super’ flavor (8+ miles in distance). A summary of the Spartan flavors:

Sprint (3+ miles)
Super (8+ miles)
Beast (12+ miles)

So glad the Spartan Race is coming to Buncombe County. If you are signing up to run the Spartan Race, please insert code BUNCOMBE and the Spartan Race will make a donation to the Buncombe County Schools Foundation! Your registration can make a difference in a child’s life. #Runforareason #BCSF

I’ve never been to one of these but I heard an interview with joe de sana, the guy who runs them. They are truly insane competitions. Only a handful of people actually finish them each time.

i’ll be signing up. been looking to transition from ultra-marathons to obstacle runs; nice to finally get one i won’t have to drive to another city for.
