Buzzbuilder: Inside Echo Mountain Studios

So here are a few little tidbits we’ve gleaned since we actually figured out where Echo Mountain Studios is located in Ashvegas. This music recording studio, in a former church building between the dry cleaners and HairSpray on French Broad Ave., has it going on.

Here are a few insider tidbits:

– Our favorite band in the world, the Avett Brothers, have been recording their new album at Echo Mountain. The album will be out later this year.

– Another band lined up to record at Echo Mountain is called VHS to Beta. They’re also way cool. They sound like Pet Shop Boys meets Depeche Mode. Hot, baby.

– In what may have been the hottest holiday after-party, the folks at Echo Mountain Studios invited everybody over to their place for breakfast after the big Warren Haynes Christmas Jam. Word is that just about everybody except Dave Matthews showed up.

We can see it now: Haynes at the head of a giant wooden table, shoveling down the scrambled eggs while DJ Logic sips a little carrot juice, Marty Stuart’s got his biscuits and gravy and the New Orleans Social Club is noshing with Taj Mahal on some benets. There’s Randall Bramblett with an omlete. And don’t forget Taylor Hicks with his pancakes and Audley Freed with his cereal.

What a scene.

For months I’ve been wondering why the rabid interest in the Avett Brothers. I have one of their early CDs that I though was okay, plus the very sloppy and unfocused live one from last year. I just didn’t get it. Then I got my ears wrapped around the recent Four Thieves Gone and suddenly I get it. Great songs crammed full of hooks and incorporating many old-time and county influences. Completely orginal and a lot of fun, too. Ok, Ash, I understand now. Hope to see them live sometime soon
