Property records show that Forestry Camp LLC paid $652,000 for 16 Shady Oak Dr. The address for the LLC is 40 Collier Ave., which is the downtown home of Burial Beer. The property is near Biltmore Village. Here’s a description:
Property is an old CCC Camp and has several buildings in place. Buildings can be converted and used or property is well located for different use. Property is zoned CI (commercial/industrial) and includes a residential component allowing 16 units per acre. Located just on the edge of the Biltmore area of Asheville, NC, it is very convenient to interstate and downtown. Perfect for office, industrial, or residential multi-family.
Back in November, Doug Reiser, who owns Burial with his wife, Jess, confirmed that he was actively looking for another location and that he had looked at the Shady Oak property. But at the time, Reiser said he hadn’t made a decision and was still searching.
Reiser said in November that he originally harbored the idea of opening a brewery on a farm setting. Reiser says he’s begun to let go of that dream, in part because of the difficulty and expense of finding a location, as well as the fact that there are already at least a couple such breweries already in the works around Asheville.
The Shady Oak property’s history is interesting, what with its past as a Civilian Conservation Corps camp in the 1930s, and then as a World War II U.S. Army Reserve barracks, and then as a Forest Service camp.
Demand has grown steadily for Burial the beer-maker has garnered more and more accolades for the quality of its beers.

We are thrilled to finally provide the real details of our expansion. But before we delve into details, we wanted to thanks several important people. This year is going to be one of growth, of inspiration and of new craft for Burial Beer Co. We are expanding our brewery to a second location in Biltmore Village. A property that is over an acre in size with 6 buildings built in the early 1900’s. Utilized as part of President FDR’s New Deal program during the Great Depression to provide jobs to young men and help build the Blue Ridge Parkway, we are beyond excited to be on a journey to revitalize an historically significant property in Asheville.
On this property, we will be restoring several buildings including: a building to house our new production facility; a two story, one of a kind bar and lounge nestled in a 6,000 square foot wood accented lodge, featuring Burial specialty beers among some rare guest taps. A true exploration of beer and bourbon; and a restaurant where we will partner with a local chef. There is still more to come as we revamp the outdoor space to host festivals, grow ingredients for our beers and unveil another, creative space in the other buildings on the property.
We will be brewing on the new system in early Spring 2016 with plans to open the new taproom in Fall 2016 and the restaurant in Spring 2017. Further more, we will be launching a brand new line of sour and wild farmhouse ales Summer 2016.
