Buncombe County commissioners to discuss banning smoking in all county facilities, all county-owned property

Share

Buncombe County commissioners have one whale of an agenda set for their Aug. 4 meeting. One of the hottest topics of debate may well be a proposal to ban smoking in all county facilities and on all county-owned property.

I think smoking is already banned inside most buildings, but there are smoking areas outside. I think smoking is also banned in county-owned vehicles. But an outright ban on all county property would make it tough on people who smoke. I guess they could walk across the street from a county building or whatever, but that might be awkward.

In tobacco-loving North Carolina, such a proposal isn’t just going to slide by with no comment.

Commissioners also plan to talk about:

-Bids for renovation work at Pack Memorial Library. It looks like a more than $3 million project that’s needed.

-Zoning regulations. Yes, commissioners are still zoning.

And what about a sidewalk that is, say, fifteen feet from a county building’s entrance? I guess people can still smoke there. And always will.

Would that extend to Pack Square Park … or is that considered to be owned by the City?

It would certainly be a downer for all those folks who stand around outside the Courthouse (the employees on the front steps, and the ‘general public’ outside the lower entrance)!
