Breaking: Montreat College is terminating numerous employees

Here’s the word from a loyal reader:

Head up. Big news breaking at Montreat College. Over 25 percent the employees are being terminated. Certain academic departments are being eliminated as of the end of the semester. More news to follow tonight. Media release will go out later today.

Anyone have any more detail?

Here’s more from my source:

Chairman of the Board of Trustees is speaking at an all-employee meeting at this time. No one knows what the ultimate outcome will be but small colleges across America are having problems staying open. The finanical models for a small 400 student college just aren’t viable. My prediction is that they’ll look to merge with another small college.

I don’t know if the students have been notified yet but all current faculty will continue thorugh the end of the semester. Education, Art, Music and other departments will be elminated at the end of the semester. No one has commented on how Athletic teams might be effected.

I would caution anyone who is interested in attending Montreat College to be aware that the people in administrative roles are dangerous, bigoted, and self-absorbed individuals who hide behind the guise of academia to promote their religious views. These views are not only antiquated, but are discriminative, and by federal standards are illegal. I would run, not walk away from this cultish institution as fast as you can.

I, too, am an alumni of Montreat College (and UNC Chapel Hill). Sad that you felt it necessary to spread rumors about this plan; and feel certain you must have made a correction somewhere.

Perhaps a focus on education rather than mythical religious characters would help bring more applicants interested in higher learning and willing to pay for it.

As a happy, successful alumus of this wonderful institution it makes me sad to see this. I don’t buy the statement made above: the “financial models for a small 400 student college just aren’t viable.” More accurately, I would say that this particular school may have been poorly executing on a poorly developed model. There are lots of small schools doing well in today’s market.

Montreat charges more than UNC-CH, UNC-A, NC State, and various others. There’s no reason that’s necessary. Simply provide what students are seeking, at a fair value, and the classrooms will fill up. You can’t tell me that as tuition rises 9% per year at every other college across the country, small schools just can’t compete. That’s just wrong.
