Beatings, killings, and beautiful weather in the news

Child beaten
Police told WLOSer Holly Headache Friday that a 3-month-old child suffered a skull fracture and may have been the victim of Shaken Baby Syndrome. The 18-year-old boyfriend of the mother has been arrested in connection with the case.

Holly played us the disturbing 911 call of the frantic mother, and Holly also talked to a neighbor who said she tried to help the baby. The mother knocked on the neighbor’s door at the Mountain Glenn Apartments in Brevard and said the baby wasn’t breathing. The neighbor did what she could. She said the baby had blood coming from its nose and looked purple.

The baby was taken to the Transylvania County hospital, then airlifted to Mission Hospitals.

Father, son charged with murder
Buncombe County police arrested and charged a father and son in Buncombe County who are wanted in connection with a double homicide in upstate South Carolina. Louis Richey and Phillip Richey were being held without bond, charged in Tuesday killings in Belton, S.C. The Richeys were discoverd up on Justice Ridge Road.

Shue dodges murder conviction
Johnny Cochran or Sean Devereux? That’s the question.

The answer is that Johnny’s dead, so if you ever get yourself in a jam, hire Devereaux.

Defense attorney Devereux, he of the silver-haired, tanned good looks, proved once again why he gets paid the big bucks. Deveraux worked his magic to convince a jury to find his client, Bracken Shue, guilty of a lesser charge after a two-week trial.

Shue had been charged with second-degree murder and racing in the February death of Jennifer Williams, a woman who was a passenger in his truck when it crashed on Mills Gap Road. Police said Shue had been racing Billy Taylor and crashed.

On Friday, a jury convicted Shue of misdemeanor death by vehicle and some related charges. All told, he’ll spend 90 days in jail.

The cagey Devereux secured a stellar expert witness, whom the jury clearly believed over state troopers. Devereux’s witness apparently convinced the jury that Shue and Taylor were not racing, and that Taylor forced Shue off the road, causing the wreck.

“It’s a fair verdict,” Devereux told the TV cameras in a cramped elevator, surely filled with the sweet scent of his mesmerizing fragrance (Old Spice, according to his kid.)

The weather – awesome
Supposed to be 65 or 70 degrees today and tomorrow. Wow!

Home invasions
Some old people in Transylvania County had their homes broken into. One woman was beaten with a metal pole. The crook stole a car, jewelry, antique guns and more from the homes on Big Bend Road.

Carolyn “Little Red” Ryan brought us this story, and the best part was the way her camera man zoomed in on face of the Brevard police chief, who looked right into the camera with his toughest cop face and said: “Word to the people that perpetrated these crimes – we’re on you and we’re not gonna turn loose.”

He was pissed.

Simple Simon proves why he’s simple
Pat “Simple” Simon proved again why he’s so dumb – in a report about the Polar Express train ride out in Bryson City, Simon repeated referred to is as the “Polar Bear Express.”

Despite the fact that the “Polar Express” is a hugely popular children’s book and a major motion picture, Simple Simon couldn’t stop reading what the teleprompter told him. Engage yer brain dude. O. that’s right. You ain’t got one. Never mind.

In other news…
Sheraldo made a big deal out of a state community college board report about financial shennigans at Blue Ridge Community College. Sheraldo was unable to explain this story and tell us why we should care. It sounded like a big he said-she said. Something about how money was used to build the school’s baseball team and stadium… A disabled woman said she got a bill for a motorized Aerflow chair that she shouldn’t have gotten. WLOSers spread this story out over two newscasts, and we didn’t bother to find out what the fuss was about… And cameras along I-40 in Haywood County will be used to monitor traffic. The cameras used to be used for fog detection.

The Home invasion Story has another sad angle to it.

The woman who was beaten with the lead pipe was only in this new house becuase her old home had burned to the ground a month ago, so she rented a place to live so she could be near the hospital…for treatment and surgery on a brain disorder….

And the other family wasn’t home becuase the owners sister had just died two days ago, and they were all at her funeral…

Maybe one of the most depressing stories I’ve heard in months.

Sheraldo didn’t explain it well, but it is a significant story. President "Kitchen" Sink ofBRCC has repeatedly failed to cooperate with state investigators. As I understand it, the state is interested because under state laws, community colleges are prohibited from spending state education funds on sports teams. Supposedly Sink has allowed BRCC to do just that. He claims that all money for athletic teams is raised separately and independently, but he has consistently withheld the school’s accounting records from outside scrutiny. Are Sink and the school guilty of these allegations? I have no idea, but as long as they act as if they have something to hide they deserve the scrutiny. The Hendersonville Times-News has done a good job of reporting this story all year. Who says nothing ever happens in Hooterville? Oh, that’s right, I do.
