Ashvegas reader: Meet the ‘unofficial king of West Asheville

Share

From loyal reader Hollis:

this is FRITZ and I believe he is the unofficial KING OF WEST ASHEVILLE. He used to shop at WAL MART, where I worked and he is a delightful guy. I think he used to do electronics stuff for the military and government.

He is an extremely intelligent person and can discourse, at length about most anything. I believe he may have GURU powers. thought you might be interested.

never meant to make fun of FRITZ…just to celebrate his gumption and let people know that he is important to me.

Why post this poor guys photo? Is it Ashvegas policy to make fun of people now?

I am not sure why this happens so often, but there is always one poor soul in a community that is called the "king" or the "mayor" and as is most often the case this person has had a hard time of things. Maybe they are homeless or really eccentric, but in any event do you think it's appropriate to call them King when clearly you apply the moniker because it is so ironic? There are many intelligent people in Asheville that can hold discourse on a number of topics but you don't call them King, or secretary or senator… what's your real motivation to this name fun? I think you (although in good spirits, I hope) are being insensitive and maybe a little bit of a d-bag. This person is a grown man, most likely older than you and apparently gets little of the respect or fair share that he deserves from anyone (including the government). You say has an interesting story? That he was successful in the military and has been productive throughout his life?; well maybe then you should take up his cause; write his biography or conduct an interview with him. Post that instead. Maybe use the proceeds to see that he has food and healthy place to live as well as a cool name that people say "isn't that cute" or whatever it is the insulated "middle class" of asheville says when they see someone on the periphery of society that they feel is funny or whimsical. Spend a day in his shoes and we will see if posting your photo online while calling you the "unofficial" Court Jester of Asheville agrees with your sense of irony. Everyone here is here to entertain you. If you really admire this person do something FOR them not about them.

Is he related to West Asheville's beloved "Goat Man"?

Looks like he may have participated in The Central Intelligence Agencys' MKULTRA experiments-for the military.

He's using his GURU powers to attach all those bags to his bike. Well done!
